Chapter 1 I found this hack of the NES Muppets game the other day. There's always a few hacks of NES games with sloppily added violence, but this one is more elaborate than most. The result is very demented. I'll add some notes but mostly I'll let the screencaps do the talking (literally, for a couple of them). The new opening text scrawl sets the mood for this hack. It sounds like the Muppets are being put through purgatory for some evil deeds they committed. The stage select has been modified quite a bit, but still has 4 levels. I'll be playing them in vertical order. RIVERThis level has Kermit rafting down a river...made of blood. It plays the same as the original, rafting downwards and trying to avoid the walls and obstacles. New enemies have been added, like chomping heads. And these strange evil Kermits that rise up and try to grab you. The level ends with Kermit descending into a hellmouth.

Its super cool that all the foes look like Kermit. Even the hellmuoth has a Kermit look to it.

The sprites add so much to this.
If I were reading this, I would honestly roll my eyes at a river of blood and evil grinning Kermits. But your visuals actually make it look kind of creepy.
But then again, I'm guessing that stuff like this is designed to make it look like all the other uninspired "scary" hack, and that thing will get genuinely disturbing later on.
man, my compliments can sound really back-handed....

Chapter 2 DRIVE"Drive" plays differently from the original, here you're being chased through by a flying monster. Bombs and oil slicks have been replaced with acid pits and rocks. It's a lot more difficult to get through than the original level was (and that was bad enough due to the crappy controls.) Making it worse, the flying monster can breathe fire... ...And halfway through, clones start to enter the level. Their A.I. is dumb and they can knock you into obstacles. The worst thing is when they hit you and you get knocked back into the monster's grasp, which is a game over. From this point on, the amount of acid pits doubles. The clones begin to rapidly die off. You might notice that I haven't lost any lives. This is only because I've practiced this a lot, and I'm using loads of save states. At the end of the level is a barricade of rocks, with a path leading to a rock by itself. Crashing into this rock completes the level.

The comment on the clones ai made me laugh a little. We should call the monster Oggie beacuse its face rreminds me of a cave man's and animal's.

Woah what? I see two threads here by dodo, one with 0 replies and one with 5. Did he pull this story he's talking about? If it's either of the two he posted, while they're nicely written and all I can't see them taking more time to make than some of these original sprites. Don't be toxic man.

Chapter 3 VOIDI went back through the river level a couple times to stock up on extra lives, because this level is a pain in the ass. It was aggravating in the original too, and the difficulty is mostly the same here. "Void" starts out looking like the original "Space Ride" level. Gonzo is in a spacecraft that has terrible steering issues and constantly drifts upward. You have to navigate through loads of things, so many that you won't be able to dodge them all. It starts off with an asteroid field, which isn't too hard to get through (once you get used to the controls). Another taunt screen comes up during this segment. After clearing the asteroids you start encountering large versions of those YIP YIP aliens. They're more mobile than the asteroids but don't have any attacks. They start appearing in pairs, and then appear 3 at a time. They take 5 shots to kill, and when they die they eat themselves. After getting through the last group, you enter the cave. The cave is when things start to get irritating. There are turret enemies shaped like Gonzo's head on the walls and the floor that shoot at you, and it's difficult to dodge. There's a new enemy, which is a strange 2-legged Gonzo creature. It tries to jump on you. Not too bad on it's own, but they seem to be strategically placed in order to mess up the player. After getting through the turrets, a wave of enemy muppets in their own spacecraft start to appear. There's 2 types, Beaker and that muppet with the glasses whose name I can't remember. They both can fly and shoot, but Beaker moves a lot faster. You can see the chicken which gives you an extra-life, it's been changed to look very thin. The last stretch of the level has no enemies, or at least not any that are alive. You can see bodies and crashed spacecrafts webbed onto the ceiling and floor. And you know what that means... Spider boss. Originally the boss of this level was an immobile space station that just sent out satellites after you. This Gonzo spider is very different. It scuttles from side to side, spitting webs and stabbing with it's front legs. If the webbing hits you, you start to move slower. And since you're always drifting upwards for some reason, this sends you right into the spider's grasp. It's best to move up and far away from the spider, to stay out of range. Once it starts stabbing with it's legs, carefully move to the bottom center of the screen and start shooting it in the face. This is the only part that takes damage. And once the face has been shot enough... It falls off, revealing a bloodied spider head. It continues using the same tactics, except now it moves twice as fast. When killed, it flips over and falls off the ceiling, random parts of it exploding as it goes. Another text screen comes up to tell you how to complete the level. It's not pretty.
