I was working at Denny's one Sunday morning the day that this happened. It had been about 5 months since I came to Kentucky, and there were many unpleasant occurrences in that time. I tried my best to not let it bother me, but nothing would prepare me for what I was going to face that morning.
It was a very quiet, dull morning. 2 hours had gone by since I arrived and there were no customers coming in. I was there by myself, since Frank had left early due to some family related manner. Something just felt wrong that day. The place wasn't supposed to be this empty.
I tried to look at the positive side, and just enjoy having some quiet time to think about things. But thinking about my life went the same way it always does - pushing down the feelings of having made some terrible mistake by coming here.
And then he showed up.
I looked out through the window and saw a wide figure walking towards the diner. I could tell there was something very odd about this person. I couldn't see their head and they appeared to walk without moving their feet. Before I could tell exactly what I was looking at, he was already at the door.
Seeing it up close, it became immediately apparent that this figure was not human at all. It had human-like features, a face, arms, and legs like ours. It even wore jeans, shoes, and sleeves. But where a human would have a torso and a head, this figure had a bloated, orange lump for a body. After opening the door, he spoke;
"I'm very hungry."
He hovered up to the table and sat down, just inches away from me. I could see straight into his soulless, not-quite-human eyes, and he looked into mine. I was beginning to hyperventilate when he made a demand.
"Give me the salt!"
With a trembling hand I gave him the salt container. "Why did he want just the salt? He had nothing to put salt on yet. What will he do with it?" To my horror, he simply threw it into his mouth and swallowed it whole. His eyes rolled up as he chewed, completely unfazed by the crunching of broken glass that was surely ripping away at the inside of his mouth.
"This isn't real. This can't possibly be happening. This is some kind of horrible hangover nightmare. Soon this will end and I will wake u-"
"GIVE ME THE SANDWICH."
I bolted to grab something, and by mistake I had given him a piece of bread. He howled "NO!" as he slapped the bread aside, and his grotesque orange face contorted with fury. "I DON'T WANT THAT."
I just froze, expecting the worst. He stared me down for a few seconds, and his eyebrows shifted. He repeated his previous demand, and this time I gave him the sandwich. I moved my hand away quickly for fear of making contact with this thing. He devoured the sandwich just like he had with the salt container, chewing with his mouth wide open making disgusting noises and rolling his eyes as if having some orgasmic reaction. And then it stopped.
I knew then that the beast would ask for the only thing left on the counter, a wheel of Ricotta cheese. He strangely enunciated the word "cheese", drawing out the "EEEE" sound. I gave him the cheese before he finished his sentence, and he somehow managed to finish saying "cheese" while devouring it. And then it was gone, leaving the counter empty.
I thought to myself; "Now what?"
Without changing expression, the orange creature had made the food behind the counter levitate upwards to replace what he had eaten. This food wasn't even ready to serve, some of it was still frozen or in packaging. But it didn't matter to him.
And so we went through the cycle again. He ordered a food item and I gave it to him. There was no indication that he would eventually be satisfied, or that this would ever end. It seemed as if he wouldn't stop until he had eaten everything I had to offer, and I shuddered to think what would happen then. As he continued to indulge himself, I notice that he was slowly increasing in size with each serving.
My mind was running and that's when I made another mistake. He wanted the hot dog, but I had given him a slice of pizza instead. Before I realized what I had done wrong, he smacked it away and then grabbed me by the collar. He pulled my face against his and said;
"I don't know what your problem is, and I don't care. But when I ask you for something, you're going to give it to me. And if you fuck up one more time, I promise you won't be leaving here alive."
He threw me back against the wall, and waited for me to get back up before asking for the pizza with a condescending tone. We spent what felt like years going through the rest of the diner's inventory. The beast ate several glass containers, bowls, and cardboard packages along with the food, and all the while, his sickening orange hide continued to swell up.
As I feared, he had eventually cleaned out the entire inventory. I tried to prepare myself for what his reaction to this would be. He just said "Ya know, that wasn't too bad." With that, he ran out through the door as quickly as he had entered. And there I was by myself again, scared out of my fucking mind and trying to come up with an explanation to tell the manager about why our entire inventory was gone.
And that orange bastard didn't even leave a tip.
