I've never played the first two but the third one is fantastic and the fourth one comes out tomorrow.
The third game is one of the most entertaining things I've played in a while. It's essentially GTA if GTA was self-aware, had fan-service of many types, was totally ridiculous and encouraged you to be a dick. I can't recommend it enough.
It's about being the leader of a crime organization who apparently becomes the President in the new one. There are also aliens in the fourth game apparently. Some side challenges in the third game include driving an ATV while on fire, throwing yourself into traffic to get insurance money, and slaughtering a bunch of costumed mascots in a Saw-style arena for a television show hosted by a creepy cat dude.

You can also play through the entire game co-op so that's cool. It's got sweet customization options for characters and cars and shit too. I've been playing the third game as a British drag queen. Also you can use a giant purple dildo as a weapon.
