Well, maybe you got me there since I can understand complaints about them being kind of extreme for basic player's handbook races. On the other hand, though, diversifying to such an extreme is something I can really appreciate the principle of even if I'd have gone with subtler things.
Like even I would find it too much if they let you play some sort of beholder-man right off the bat in the main game.

I don't remember being different but maybe I was less enthused about forums at the time or too many other people were talking all at once.
When I played D&D the first of two DM's was also trying to design his own original fantasy RPG and hyped up his races with "you can play ANYTHING!" but it turned out you could really just play one of the dozen species he made that were similar to D&D's with fancier names, except that his elves were plant people with wooden skin. There may have been some kind of wolf people too.
The system wasn't very different from D&D 3e either.

That happens yeah. Its really hard to homebrew stuff as actually memorable as the core races and stuff, not mention nerds are lazy.

And if you try to replace the classics of the genre with something too new you probably lose a big chunk of the audience anyway.

i remember seeing a d&d monster one time that was basically just a skull with a spinal column that moved around like a snake. anyone know which monster that is? I realise there's probably like 10 things that it could be.
