MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM WIBBLE. Pointing out this game ends with hitting a Dinosaur with a boot and getting an unrewarding victory screen.

Trailer for a game called Splatoon with an interesting core mechanic. Looks like it could be a good time if you've got a Wii U.

Another E3 trailer, this time for a game called Bloodborne. It's by the guys who made Dark Souls (aka one of my two favorite games of all time) and seems to have a cool grungy Victorian setting. Unfortunately, it's PS4 exclusive.

I'm loving the Steam summer sale. With $20 I was able to buy Dishonored, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, One Way Heroics, Honest Hearts (New Vegas DLC), and Wrath of the Lamb (Binding of Isaac DLC). My thoughts on each so far:
Dishonored - Fun emergent stealth with lots of creative ways to get around and dispose of enemies. Not really stellar writing, but really nice worldbuilding and atmosphere. Well-implemented powers and bone charms (basically perks). The chaos mechanic is bullshit. EDIT: I take a lot of this back. I've played a couple more hours and this is one of the least engaging games I've ever played. I practically have to force myself to play for longer than 5 minutes at a time. I don't know why, but past the first couple levels I can't stay engaged by Dishonored.
Blood Dragon - Great cheesy writing and action that calls to mind the NES era of gaming, saturday morning cartoons, and pretty much every '80s cyberpunk movie. Really fun shooting and a bit of stealth. Wish the skills you unlocked were in a tree instead of being linear. The titular monsters look like neon laser-shooting dinosaurs.
One Way Heroics - Weird pseudo-JRPG/roguelike. Confusing at first, but a neat little game once you figure it out. Reminds me somewhat of Desktop Dungeons, because it seems like it could become a timesink in short sessions. Not entirely sure if it's my kind of thing, though. EDIT: I take it back, there's far more to it than meets the eye. There are lots of classes with lots of variation and lots of secrets to find. It's a good time.
Honest Hearts - Whole new area which feels completely different from the Mojave. Cool tribal-based storyline. A bunch of new loot, but most of it isn't that great. One of the easier add-ons for New Vegas.
Wrath of the Lamb - Adds a whole lot of content to BOI. I haven't figured it all out quite yet, but I'm having a good time experimenting and discovering. Enemies are considerably more difficult than in the base game, but power-ups are stronger as well. It's nice to see new things in the dungeons again.

videogame rewive:
TOMODACHI LIFE
most concise way i can put it: like animal crossing that more resembles sims, with a lot more customization in a few areas but lacking in many others.
Sure, it's quirky, but quirky can't sustain a game alone.
It's really not a $40 game. If you had to choose between this and AC, AC wins every time.
That said, still fun, and far less soul-sucking and time-consuming than AC as well.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag might be one of my favorite games. I'm almost at the end of the main campaign, and while the story is above-average at best, it's interesting enough to keep me wanting to see the end. All of the gameplay fits together seamlessly, from the sailing, to the stealth, to the combat. The open world is full of things to see and do, and the sidequests are fun or rewarding enough that I've done a lot of them already. There's a nice sense of progression, too, so you really feel like both you and your ship are gradually becoming stronger.
I've got a few criticisms: a not insignificant amount of the missions involve tailing or eavesdropping on people (which is tedious and finicky), the story seems to jump around a bit, the diving could be way more interesting, etc. And on a technical level, the game is poorly optimized and runs at around 20 fps unless I'm on low graphics settings, and is quite glitchy. It's not uncommon to fast-travel somewhere and see a huge hole in the water, out of which your ship will emerge with the crew nowhere to be found.
Still, the good far outweighs the bad. AC4 is probably the best pirate simulator ever.

I've never played it. The trading and piracy seems like something I'd enjoy, but there's something about the gameplay I've seen that always put me off. I can't quite put my finger on what it was though.
Speaking of open-world sailing and trading sims, I played some Sunless Sea before I went on vacation. It's set in the same universe as Fallen London, which I played a fair amount of because of it's cool world and neat self-contained stories. Sunless Sea is essentially Fallen London with sailing in between all the stories and everything that comes with it. Don't get me wrong, though, that adds a lot, but at it's core you'll mostly be sailing and solving interesting mysteries. I still like it a lot, because the trading and atmosphere are good, and there's a nice sense of discovery when you sail around.
The terror meter is almost unmanageable most of the time, because it increases really fast and the only ways of significantly decreasing terror tend to be horribly expensive. The combat also isn't very engaging, and I beat most enemies using the exact same strategy. Sneaking around in your ship also isn't very effective, even if your lights are off and you have a high Veils stat.
While it's fun for some time, I think I'll take a break until more features and balancing is added.

what i learned from playing Payday 2 on random servers is that you can have either a team of skilled players who know what they're doing or a team of players who speak the same language as you, but you can't have both.
