here's a story about a crank or kook named Ernie Primeau.

Back in the late 1990's, Ernie decided he would "go public" on the Usenet group devoted to male hairloss, alt.baldspot. Ernie revealed that established treatments so far for male pattern baldness, mainly Rogaine and Propecia, are not only not effective, but actually CAUSE MORE hair loss. The ONLY TRUE way to regrow hair was his "method." His method is basically taking a pair of tweezers and plucking out every single last hair growing on your body. Body hair, according to Ernie, robs head hair of the vital nutrients it needs in order to grow. Once all your body hair has been plucked out, your head hair will gradually regrow after several years.

For a while, he sold a "formula" over the web that he said mainly consisted of Saw Palmetto that you were supposed to rub on your skin after plucking your body hair. Yes, Saw Palmetto (an herbal supplement typically taken to slow down male pattern baldness) also not only did nothing to stop hairloss, it actually CAUSES hair loss, so, why not rub it on the plucked body hair to keep it from growing back, thereby making head hair grow back even faster?

Ernie became VERY dedicated to posting to alt.baldspot. Of course, everyone ridiculed him, including the founder of hairlosshelp.com, who posting to alt.baldspot under the name "Farrel".

As is usual on Usenet, people began logging in under different names (as well as logging in as Ernie himself) to ridicule him. Ernie soon became convinced that the majority of posters on alt.baldspot were Farrel himself logging in under a different name. Ernie himself began to log in as "dpydotsmw" as a user who agrees with and supports Ernie.

For the past decade up until this very day, alt.baldspot has ceased to function as a useful Usenet discussion group. It is populated solely by Ernie who continues to post about his "method," and a small group of people who continue to find amusement in replying to Ernie and ridiculing him. While the actual "Farrel" has long since stopped posting to Usenet, Ernie remains convinced that virtually everyone posting to alt.baldspot other than himself is Farrel posting under different names.
